Units

Units are uniquely designed for each school by the classroom and specialty teachers and the teaching artists to combine curriculum, the teaching artist's residency and performance that each participating grade utilizes to inform instruction. 

 

The following are focus artworks viewed by selected grade levels during the 2011-2013 school years. Working collaboratively, teaching artists and teachers, developed  5-week, units of study for each work, that were closely aligned  to the curriculum needs of each school.

Infinitus- Grade 4

Infinitus is a critically acclaimed beatboxing string trio known for their unique sounds and upbeat performance style. With a repertoire featuring classical standards and original jazz/hip hop arrangements and compositions, Infinitus is quickly becoming one of North America's premiere chamber groups.

Cuentos: Tales from the Latin America at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts - Grade 2

With colorful tales from the Caribbean, South America and the Bronx, acclaimed storyteller David Gonzalez paints a vivid picture of the people and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.  These stories are filled with memorable characters, fantastic plots, and positive messages that are sure to captivate students' attention.

Step Afrika! at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts - Grade 2

Step Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to stepping.Founded in December 1994 the company is celebrated worldwide for its efforts to promote an appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition's use as an educational tool for young people.

Frindle at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center- Grade 3

Based on the multiple award-winning novel by Andrew Clements this quirky, imaginative tale about creative thought and the power of words will have your young audience inventing their own words.

Peter and the Wolf - Grades 2 & 3

Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf tells a story, with musical accompaniment, of a disobedient boy who, through the use of his wits, courage and ingenuity, captures a wolf. Presented by the Ballet Long Island, Peter and the entourage of animals will dance to a fusion of ballet, jazz and Russian folk movement.

The True Story of the Three Little Pigs at Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center-Grade 2

Based on the hilariously popular book, the play begins where the book leaves off, with Alexander T. Wolf on trial for the murder of two of the three little pigs.   GUILTY or NOT GUILTY? When all the witness statements are in, the audience piglets become the jury and determine Al's fate!

Charlotte Blake Alston - Grade 3

CHARLOTTE BLAKE ALSTON is a storyteller, narrator, instrumentalist and singer who breathes life into traditional and contemporary stories from African and African American oral and cultural traditions. Her solo performances are often enhanced with traditional instruments such as the djembe, mbira, shekere or the 21-stringed kora.

Dream Carver - Grades 3 & 4

Dream Carver is a 55-minute bilingual musical about Mateo, a young boy in Oaxaca, Mexico, whose father has taught him to carve small wooden toys in the traditional way.  The message of the show is delivered in five original songs that encourage young audiences to think creatively, try new things, and follow their dreams.
